The Certified School Nurse is prepared to care for:
  • students with acute and/or chronic medical conditions
  • nutritional concerns
  • medication administration
  • vaccine assurance and promotion
  • sports physicals
  • concussion and other injuries
  • health screenings mandated by the State of New Jersey
  • assisting with 504 plans
  • preparing Individual Health Plans for students with asthma, severe allergies, migraines, visual and hearing difficulties, and other health impairments

When to keep your child home for illness

Students who have a temperature of 100.4 F or greater must remain home from school. They may return when their temperature is less than 100.4 F for 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine like (Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen). 

Students who have experienced vomiting and/or diarrhea must be free of those complaints for 24 hours before returning to school.

Students who are diagnosed with Strep Throat or Conjunctivitis must be on medication for 24 hours before returning to school.

Absences:   A phone call, email to conroyc@hbschools.org , or a note in the Genesis Parent Portal is required each day of absence  prior to 8:15am.  Students must present a parent's or doctor's note to the homeroom teacher on the day they return to school. For your convenience, here is the link to the absence form.

Medications

Any medicine that is to be administered at school is done so that the child may attend school.  Medication should be in its original container and box from the pharmacy and accompanied by the physician's order. There are no exceptions.

Sports Physicals are due to the Nurse and need to be cleared by our school physician prior to students being allowed to participate. Each student must have had a physical within 365 days of when the sport begins.

6th Grade Information

The State of New Jersey, Department of Health and Senior Services, has mandated that children born after January 1997 and entering 6th grade must receive a booster dose of Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus (Tdap) and one dose of the Meningococcal vaccine. Documentation of having received these vaccines must be provided upon entry into 6th grade. If your child receives these immunizations during his/her 5th grade school year, please send documentation to your child’s school nurse.

Documentation

A student may be exempted from mandatory immunizations if there is a medical exemption from a licensed physician or certified nurse practitioner. A parent/guardian may request a religious exemption by submitting a written statement to the school.

District Annual Health Screening

Annual: height, weight, blood pressure screening is completed for all students.

Vision: grades 6th and 8th

Hearing: grade 7

Scoliosis: grades 5th and 7th - if you wish to opt your child out of this screening, please complete the attached form. An email will be sent out prior to the screenings.

Transfer Students/New Students

Transfer students, from another school in the state of New Jersey, are required to have up to date immunizations, completed health history form, and documentation of a physical upon entry to a New Jersey school.

Students transferring from out-of-state or out-of-country must provide documentation of up to date immunizations, completed health history form, and a current physical examination within the past year.

Students transferring from a country with high TB incidence are required to have a Mantoux Test (a skin test for tuberculosis) before entry to school.
